JERSEY CAMP-13 TO 21 AUGUST 2013

Adventure Training, Wing Event  Comments Off on JERSEY CAMP-13 TO 21 AUGUST 2013
Jan 162013

For 13 years, Dorset & Wiltshire Wing has been running a highly successful Adventure Training Camp

To the Island of Jersey, Kindly hosted by 7 (Overseas) Squadron ATC. This is the 14th year and the Camp will run from 13 to 21 August 2013.The Camp is open for up to 20 Cadets and will be a residential Camp.

The Camp lasts for One week on the Island of Jersey, plus an additional day on 13 Aug 2013 for pick up and travel.   The Accommodation whilst in Jersey is within the building of 7 (Overseas) Squadron ATC and cadets and staff

stay on camp beds throughout. The camp is self sufficient, so all cadets and staff assist with the preparation of meals as well as ensuring the building is kept in good order. The building has its own Kitchen, Shower and Toilet

Facilities.

The week consist of several activities which may include

  • Coasteering
  • Walking
  • Swimming
  • Kayaking
  • Climbing
  • Sailing
  • Surfing
  • Abseiling
  • Raft Racing
  • Beach Sports
  • Visits to local Educational Facilities such as Jersey Zoo

All activities are subject to the availability of qualified instructors as well as the weather conditions. The programme is flexible throughout the week to ensure maximum time is given to Adventure Training Activities.

Cadets over the age of 15 at the time of the camp and who have attended a UK camp of at least two days duration are eligible to join this camp.  It is stressed that this is a busy week of Adventure Training Activities and as such, cadets should have a good level of physical fitness and personal organisation.

The cost of this years camp is £230 per person. This has been kept at the same as the last few years. The cost includes Accommodation, Food, Transport, All Activities including educational visits, and an embroidered Polo Shirt to celebrate taking part in the Camp.

For further information please speak with Cpl NP or TH who both attended the Camp last year.  If you wish to attend the camp please apply to the Squadron through the ‘Attendance at Courses’ email form and we will get your application process underway.

Attendance on Courses

Squadron Event  Comments Off on Attendance on Courses
Jan 162013

In order to streamline the process of applying for courses and reduce the administration burden we have set up a new application process on the website.

This will allow cadets apply for courses, confirm they have accepted a place on a course and if necessary cancel their attendance on courses.

Please note that this applies to courses held at Wing level and above, Squadron  courses and events will continue to be managed using the Events Folder.

Also a reminder that places on many courses are a rare resource nowadays and that cadets should have checked throughly that they are able to fully commit before confirming their attendance on a course.

Text for Promotion Policy Letter

1.  This letter sets out the policy for cadet NCO promotions within Dorset/Wilts Wing and is to be followed with effect from 1 Jan 13 for all cadet NCO promotions from this date. This policy will NOT be applied retrospectively and all existing promotions will remain extant.

2.  The purpose of this policy is to set a single standard for cadet promotions across the Wing. This will be achieved by following laid down establishments, the requirement for cadets to meet the eligibility criteria set by HQ AC and completion of development courses (aka NCO courses) to support the individual cadet’s development as their rank and level of responsibility increases.

3.  These courses are NOT to be viewed as promotion courses where the cadet is promoted immediately on completion. Rather, they are pre-requisite personal development courses designed to ensure cadets have been trained to a set standard and have been given individual tailored feedback to help them in NCO roles. It remains for COs to make the judgement as to when a cadet is suitable for promotion, up to the rank of FS, post completion of the relevant course.

4.  Establishment. Units may only promote cadets up to the maximum numbers provided for by their unit establishment as defined by Ref A. For this purpose Cpl and Sgt posts are considered to be interchangeable. FS and CWO posts are not.

5.  Eligibility Criteria. IAW Ref B it is expected that a cadet would be Leading classification prior to promotion to Cpl and Senior classification prior to promotion to Sgt unless there were exceptional circumstances.

6.  Qualification. Sqn COs can promote cadets up to the rank of FS providing the following courses have been completed (note this includes both the training and assessment phases for JNCO and SNCO courses):

a.  Cpl. Currently there is no qualification requirement for promotion. A short course is being developed, that will be delivered at Sector level, to support development for Cpl candidates. Wg HQ will issue this course in 2013. In the interim units should continue to promote cadets to the rank of Cpl within the limitations of this policy.

b.  Sgt. Candidates for Sgt posts must have successfully completed the JNCO course. Four courses will be provided each year to support this training requirement. The JNCO course will now only be open to Cpls.

c.   FS. Candidates for FS posts must have successfully completed the SNCO course. Four courses will be provided each year to support this training requirement. The SNCO course will now only be open to Sgts.

7.  CWOs. Candidates for CWO must have completed the BASIC and have been approved as Staff Cadets by OC Wg using Pers Form 40. CWO appointments may only be approved by OC Wg and applications should follow the existing procedure.

Commandant’s Christmas Message

HQ Air Cadets  Comments Off on Commandant’s Christmas Message
Jan 082013

As we approach the festive season, I look back on my first 4 months in command of the Air Cadet Organisation and am simply amazed by all I have seen and experienced as your Commandant so far. I have already clocked up almost 12,000 miles in the car and have visited Regional and Wing HQs and a number of individual ATC Sqns. I have inspected 2 CCF (RAF) sections and visited other CCF events. I have managed to fly twice, attempted part of an obstacle course and had a go at shooting on an indoor range (don’t ask if I hit the target!). I have had the honour of presenting Duke of Edinburgh Gold awards, the Sir Arthur Marshall Trophy and a wide range of certificates of commendation. I have met with many influential people and have attended concerts and competitions, the standards of which have made me incredibly proud to be your Commandant.

But in between all these high profile, fun events, my overriding impression has been of a fantastic uniformed youth organisation, staffed by the most impressive team of adult volunteers who provide leadership and support to some incredible young people. I have received such a wonderfully warm welcome wherever I have been in the Corps and I am genuinely energised by the enthusiasm I find at all levels.

Of course, there are some problems out there and we all know that resources are tight and times are tough. However, it’s also an incredibly exciting time to be leading a cadet force, as everyone from the Prime Minister down is supportive of what we deliver for this country’s young people and impressed by the quality of young adults that progress through our training. We are in the business of creating future citizens and our adult volunteers embody all that is good about the world of volunteering – giving up their time to enable others to achieve their potential.

I look forward to 2013 with great anticipation as we seek to shape the ACO for 2020 and beyond. Many of you will have heard me mention the emerging Strategy we are working on to ensure that the Organisation continues to deliver fun, exciting and relevant activities for our cadets and also invests in the adult volunteers on whom we rely to deliver the cadet experience. My mantra for next year is to “keep the air in air cadets” and also to live up to our motto of “Venture Adventure”, whilst ensuring that all cadet activity is appropriately safe and properly supervised. I hope to involve as many cadets and volunteers as possible in this work and I will ensure that you are all kept informed of progress.

All that remains for me to do is to say a sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone in the ACO who has worked tirelessly throughout another year to support cadet activity. I say a special thank you to our volunteers, be they members of civilian committees, Civilian Instructors, ATC SNCOs and WOs, VR(T) officers, Service Instructors, padres, or gliding and flying instructors as, without you, our 45,000 cadets would never achieve all that they do. I also pay tribute to my small but dedicated team of permanent staff at HQ, Regional and Wing level, be they Civil Servants, Regular or Full-time Reservist officers – you have all done a great job under challenging circumstances.

I send all members of the ACO my very best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas and festive season. In doing so, I would ask you all to bear in mind those who cannot be with loved ones at this time of year, particularly those deployed on operations overseas – we wish them all a safe and speedy return to their families.

Happy Christmas and I wish you all you would wish for yourselves in the New Year.
